CAT vs. SOF-T vs. SWAT-T: Which Tourniquet Matches Your Mission

Hemorrhage is the leading cause of preventable trauma death — and a tourniquet applied within 3 minutes stops limb bleeding before the cascade begins. But not every tourniquet fits every scenario. ViTAC carries three TCCC-approved devices: the CAT Gen 7, SOF-T Gen 5, and SWAT-T. Each earns its place in a specific carry context. This decision matrix maps each device to mission.

The Baseline: TCCC Approval Is Non-Negotiable

The Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC) tests and approves tourniquets based on field performance data collected across tens of thousands of combat applications. Only TCCC-approved devices belong in an IFAK. ViTAC does not carry tourniquets that have not met this standard.

Field Note: Tourniquet Safety

All three tourniquets on this page are TCCC-approved. Tissue damage from tourniquet application is rare when the device is removed within 2 hours. The documented risk of limb loss from a properly applied tourniquet is significantly lower than the risk of death from uncontrolled hemorrhage.

CAT Gen 7 — Combat Application Tourniquet

The CAT Gen 7 is the U.S. Army's fielded tourniquet and the most widely deployed windlass device in modern combat. Over 4,000 documented combat applications. 87%+ hemorrhage control rate. One-handed application achievable in under 3 minutes with minimal training.

The Gen 7 adds a stabilization plate that keeps the band from folding during application — a documented failure point on earlier generations. The nylon windlass rod replaces older composite material, reducing stress fractures under high-heat storage conditions.

Best for: Primary IFAK build, EDC, law enforcement duty carry, most civilian scenarios. The default choice if you're building one kit.

Limitation: Adult limbs only. Does not work reliably on pediatric patients or K9s.

SOF-T Gen 5 — Special Operations Forces Tactical Tourniquet

The SOF-T Gen 5 uses a 1.5-inch reinforced compression band and a 5.5-inch machined aluminum windlass. The aluminum construction tolerates temperature extremes that degrade plastic windlass components — a critical factor for vehicle kits exposed to direct sun and IFAKs stored in high-heat environments year-round.

The triangular latch locks onto the windlass groove and does not loosen during patient movement. That retention characteristic makes it the preferred choice when patients will be dragged, carried, or loaded into vehicles before reaching definitive care.

Best for: Vehicle kit, hot-climate storage, scenarios involving patient movement over distance. Secondary carry for operators who already run CAT as primary.

Limitation: Slightly bulkier than CAT due to wider band and aluminum hardware. Adult limbs only.

SWAT-T — Stretch, Wrap, and Tuck

The SWAT-T is a hypo-allergenic elastomeric device that functions as a tourniquet, pressure dressing, or elastic bandage from a single piece of equipment. It is the only tourniquet on this list that works effectively on pediatric patients and K9s.

Application requires more training reps to be reliable under stress — specifically the final tuck, which must include a twist in the last wrap to hold the device. Wet conditions require particular attention to application integrity. Recheck after every patient movement.

Best for: K9 handlers, family preparedness kits, multi-role carry where space is limited. Supplement to — not a replacement for — a windlass tourniquet in a solo carry scenario.

Limitation: Requires more training reps to apply reliably under stress. Not the default choice where one-handed speed is the priority.

Two Myths That Get People Killed

Myth 1: Applying a tourniquet causes limb loss. The data does not support this. Documented cases of permanent limb damage require tourniquets left in place well beyond the 2-hour threshold. The risk of death from uncontrolled arterial hemorrhage far exceeds the risk of tissue damage from a properly applied and time-stamped tourniquet.

Myth 2: Tourniquets are a last resort. TCCC protocol treats tourniquet application as a first intervention for life-threatening extremity hemorrhage — not a last resort. Every minute of uncontrolled arterial bleeding reduces survivability. Apply first. Reassess later.

Application Standard

Placement: 2–3 inches above the wound on a single-bone segment (upper arm or upper thigh). If the wound location is unclear, apply high and tight. Tighten until no distal pulse is present. Mark time of application on the device. Recheck after every patient movement.

FAQ

Can I carry only one tourniquet?
For most civilians, one CAT Gen 7 is the correct starting point. Add a SWAT-T if your household includes children or a K9. Add a SOF-T Gen 5 to your vehicle kit where heat exposure is a factor over time.

Do all three require the same training?
No. The CAT Gen 7 requires the fewest reps to reach reliable one-handed speed under stress. The SWAT-T requires more practice — specifically the final tuck and the wrap tension. If you carry a SWAT-T without dedicated reps, it is not a reliable tool under stress.

How often should I replace my tourniquet?
A deployed tourniquet is single-use. Replace it after any training application or live use. Inspect stored devices annually: check for UV-related brittleness, windlass rod integrity, and band elasticity. Replace at the first sign of material degradation.
