What Are ANSI/ISEA Workplace First Aid Kits?
ANSI/ISEA Z308.1 is the consensus standard that defines minimum contents and quantities for workplace first aid kits in the United States. The standard splits kits into two classes:
Class A kits are designed for common workplace injuries in low-to-moderate-hazard environments — offices, retail, and similar settings. They include items like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze, scissors, and burn treatment.
Class B kits include all Class A items in larger quantities, plus additional supplies (more burn dressings, splints, eye coverings, and trauma supplies) for higher-hazard environments — construction, manufacturing, warehousing, fleet operations, and any setting with elevated injury risk.
OSHA's general first aid requirement (29 CFR 1910.151) doesn't specify exact contents but references ANSI/ISEA as the consensus baseline. Many state OSHA programs and industry-specific regulations point to ANSI/ISEA compliance as a starting point.

How to Choose the Right Workplace Kit
1. Assess Your Hazard Profile
Office, retail, and similar low-hazard settings: Class A. Manufacturing, construction, warehousing, fleet, food service, and similar elevated-hazard settings: Class B.
2. Match Kit Size to Team Size
Class A typically covers 10–25 employees per kit. Class B typically covers 25–50 employees or smaller teams in higher-hazard environments. Add additional kits for larger headcounts or distributed locations.
3. Consider Industry-Specific Requirements
Some industries (construction, oil and gas, electrical work) have additional kit requirements beyond ANSI/ISEA baseline. Review your specific OSHA standards and industry regs.
4. Plan for Refills
Workplace kits get used. Set a quarterly inspection schedule, restock used items immediately, and rotate expired supplies. Keep a refill kit on hand to avoid compliance gaps.
5. Consider Trauma Add-Ons
For elevated-hazard workplaces, consider supplementing Class B kits with bleeding control supplies (tourniquets, hemostatic gauze, chest seals) and a Stop the Bleed® station. ANSI/ISEA is a baseline — not a ceiling.
