If You Only Remember This…

  • A tourniquet is the single most important tool for stopping life-threatening extremity bleeding — properly applied, it can fully occlude arterial flow in under 60 seconds
  • The two windlass tourniquets most agencies and tactical medics standardize on are the CAT® Gen 7 and SOF® Tourniquet (SOFTT-W)
  • Carry at least one tourniquet on your person if you operate in environments where severe trauma is a real risk — and train regularly so you can apply it under stress

What Is a Tourniquet?

A tourniquet is a device applied to a limb that compresses arteries and veins enough to stop blood flow distal to the application point. In tactical and emergency medicine, windlass tourniquets are the gold standard for arterial extremity hemorrhage — the kind of bleeding that can cost a life in 3–5 minutes if uncontrolled.

Modern tourniquets like the CAT® Gen 7 and SOFTT-W are designed for one-handed self-application, durable construction, and reliable performance in cold, wet, dirty, or high-stress conditions. They're carried by every U.S. military service, most law enforcement agencies, and an increasing number of trained civilians.

What's Inside This Collection

  • CAT® Gen 7 — the Combat Application Tourniquet, the most widely-issued and trained-on windlass tourniquet in U.S. military and law enforcement
  • SOF® Tourniquet Gen 5 — aluminum windlass design from Tactical Medical Solutions, used by special operations and federal agencies
  • SWAT-T — stretch-and-wrap tourniquet that doubles as a pressure dressing or elastic bandage
  • Multi-packs and holders — for facility coverage, training programs, and standardized loadouts

How to Choose the Right Tourniquet

1. Default to a Windlass Design
The CAT® Gen 7 and SOFTT-W are both proven windlass tourniquets with extensive field validation. If you're standardizing across a team or agency, pick one and train on it consistently.

2. Avoid Counterfeits
Counterfeit CAT® tourniquets are common online and have failed in real applications. Buy from authorized sellers, look for proper packaging and serial numbers, and be skeptical of unusually low prices.

3. Carry Training Versions
Practice with dedicated training tourniquets (typically blue) so your real ones stay in deployment-ready condition. Most agencies recommend re-training every 6–12 months.

4. Consider Backup Options
SWAT-T tourniquets are useful as backups or for pediatric applications where windlass models don't fit well. They're not a primary replacement for windlass devices.

5. Know the Limits
Tourniquets work on extremities. They won't stop bleeding from junctional wounds (neck, groin, axilla), abdominal trauma, or torso injuries — those require hemostatic gauze and pressure.

Who This Collection Is For (And Who It's Not For)

This is for you if: You're stocking individual or agency tourniquets, refilling a trauma kit, building a custom IFAK, or supplying a training program. You understand that tourniquet quality is non-negotiable.

This may not be for you if: You're looking for a complete pre-built trauma kit (see our Bleeding Control Kits or IFAK collections).
