If You Only Remember This…

  • Airway management is the "A" in MARCH — the second priority after massive hemorrhage in tactical and emergency medicine
  • The most common airway adjunct in trauma kits is the nasopharyngeal airway (NPA) — a soft, flexible tube that maintains an open airway in unconscious or semi-conscious patients
  • NPAs are sized in French (Fr) units — 28F is the most common size for adults; multi-pack options support facility coverage and training

What Are Airway Supplies?

Airway supplies are the tools used to maintain a patent (open) airway in a patient who can't keep one open on their own. In trauma scenarios, an unconscious or semi-conscious patient's tongue can fall back and obstruct the airway — a preventable cause of death if airway adjuncts aren't available.

The most accessible airway tool for trained responders is the nasopharyngeal airway (NPA), a soft rubber tube that's lubricated and inserted through the nostril to keep the airway open. NPAs work well in patients with intact gag reflexes and are tolerated better than oropharyngeal airways in semi-conscious patients.

What's Inside This Collection

  • Nasopharyngeal Airway (NPA), 28F — standard adult size, sold individually for IFAK refills and individual carry
  • NPA 28F (4-Pack) — multi-pack for facility coverage, training programs, and team loadouts

How to Choose the Right Airway Supply

1. Match Size to Patient
28F is the standard for most adult patients. Larger or smaller patients may require different sizes — trained EMS providers carry a range. For most civilian, tactical, or workplace IFAKs, 28F covers the typical case.

2. Pair With Lubricant
NPAs require water-based lubricant for insertion. Most kits and refills include single-use lubricant packets; verify before deploying.

3. Train Before You Use
NPA insertion is straightforward but requires hands-on practice to avoid trauma to the nasal mucosa. TCCC, TECC, and EMT courses cover proper technique.

4. Stock for Your Use Case
Individual IFAKs: one NPA. Vehicle and facility kits: 1–2 NPAs. Training programs and agencies: multi-packs sized to expected demand.

5. Consider Contraindications
NPAs are contraindicated in patients with suspected basilar skull fractures, severe facial trauma, or active nasal bleeding. Trained responders learn to recognize when NPA use is inappropriate.

Who This Collection Is For (And Who It's Not For)

This is for you if: You're a trained tactical medic, EMS provider, military corpsman, or civilian responder with TCCC or equivalent airway training. You're refilling an IFAK or stocking airway adjuncts for an agency, facility, or training program.

This may not be for you if: You haven't been trained on NPA insertion. Airway management is more advanced than tourniquet or hemostatic application — don't carry tools you can't deploy correctly.
