Hemostatics accelerate clot formation in deep wounds and junctional injuries where tourniquets can't be applied (neck, groin, axilla, abdomen). The most-tested and widely-used hemostatic in tactical and emergency medicine is QuikClot® Combat Gauze, with kaolin-based clotting. Hemostatic gauze is packed directly into the wound — not laid on top — and held with firm pressure for at least 3 minutes to allow clot formation
What Are Hemostatic Agents?
Hemostatic agents are gauze or dressings impregnated with materials that accelerate the body's natural clotting process. They’re used for severe wounds where tourniquets aren’t an option — deep lacerations, gunshot wounds to the torso or junctional areas, and high-volume bleeds that won’t respond to direct pressure alone. Hemostatics are crucial for effective control of such injuries.
The most common active ingredient is kaolin (a mineral that activates the clotting cascade), used in QuikClot® Combat Gauze. Other agents use chitosan (derived from shellfish) or similar materials. All work by creating a faster, more stable clot at the wound site, making Hemostatics essential for first responders and medical professionals.

How to Choose the Right Hemostatic
1. Combat Gauze for Severe Trauma
QuikClot® Combat Gauze Z-Fold is the default for serious wounds — deep lacerations, gunshots, and bleeds tourniquets can’t address.
2. EMS Dressings for Civilian Trauma Kits
QuikClot® EMS dressings are sized for general civilian use, ideal for home trauma kits, vehicle kits, and basic IFAKs.
3. Powder Format for Minor Bleeds
WoundSeal® powder works for cuts and abrasions where stitching isn’t immediately available.
4. Pair With Pressure
Hemostatic gauze must be packed firmly into the wound and held with direct pressure for effective clot formation.
5. Train Before You Use
