Individual First Aid Kits

One kit. One operator.Zero hesitation.

An IFAK — Individual First Aid Kit — is built for one person to treat one patient: themselves. Compact, fast-deploy, organized for muscle memory. Carry it on a duty belt, in a vehicle, on a plate carrier, or in a daily pack.

What Is An IFAK

One person. One kit. One mission — keep the operator alive.

An Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) is a personal-carry trauma kit designed for a single user to treat a single patient — usually themselves — until follow-on care arrives. Originally a U.S. military standard, the IFAK is now the gold-standard format for law enforcement, tactical professionals, range users, and prepared civilians who want point-of-injury readiness.

Every IFAK in this collection is built around the MARCH protocol: Massive hemorrhage, Airway, Respirations, Circulation, Hypothermia. Components are organized for muscle-memory access — tourniquet on top, gauze in reach, chest seals identifiable by feel. This collection covers everything from compact civilian IFAKs to full TCCC-aligned tactical loadouts.

How To Choose

Pick the right IFAK for your role and carry method.

Five filters that cut through the catalog and lead you to the right kit fast.

1

Match the kit to your platform

Duty belt, plate carrier, pack, vehicle, or pocket. Confirm the IFAK has the right mounting hardware — MOLLE webbing, belt loop, or rip-away backing — before you order.

2

Decide on rip-away vs fixed

Rip-away IFAKs detach in one motion for shared use across teammates or transfer to a casualty. Fixed-mount IFAKs are simpler and slightly more compact for personal carry.

3

Match capability to your training

Chest seals, NPAs, and needle decompression require training. If you're untrained, start with a hemorrhage-focused IFAK and add components as your training progresses.

4

Verify component authenticity

The tourniquet matters most. Look for genuine CAT GEN 7, SOFTT-W, or NAR — not generic windlass clones. ViTAC kits use authentic components only, sourced through authorized channels.

5

Plan for layout and access

A well-organized IFAK lets you grab the right tool by feel under stress. Look for color-coded compartments, fold-out designs, or pull tabs that organize content for speed.

IFAK Use Case Comparison

Match your role to the right IFAK.

Five common carry contexts and the IFAK type built for each.

Use Case Best Product Type Why It Fits
Patrol & duty belt Duty / tactical IFAKs Low-profile MOLLE pouch sized for belt mount. CAT tourniquet on top, hemostatic gauze and chest seals organized for one-hand access.
Plate carrier / loadout Belt / MOLLE-compatible kits Rip-away IFAKs with MOLLE backing. Detach in seconds for casualty transfer or shared team use during treatment.
Range & civilian carry Civilian IFAKs Compact pouch kits with full bleeding-control capability. Sized for a range bag, daily pack, or vehicle stash.
Vehicle / cabin staging Vehicle-mounted IFAKs Headrest or seatback mount keeps the IFAK accessible from the front or back seat. Sized for 2–4 occupants.
Refill & standardization Bleeding control refills Restock consumables — tourniquets, gauze, dressings — after training or use. Standardize loadouts across multiple kits.
The ViTAC Difference

Carried by operators.
Carried by you.

An IFAK isn't a product category — it's a piece of life-support gear. ViTAC's IFAKs are built by Army Special Forces veterans who carried IFAKs in real operational environments. We know which components matter and which ones are filler. We don't compromise on either.

Every ViTAC IFAK uses authentic name-brand components: CAT GEN 7, NAR HyFin chest seals, QuikClot Combat Gauze, NAR ETD pressure dressings. Layouts follow TCCC and MARCH protocols — the same standards used by U.S. military medics and the 23+ law enforcement agencies we supply.

If your IFAK gets used, it's the worst day of your life. We build kits that work on that day — not just pretty packaging for the ones that don't.

TCCC-Aligned

Components and layout match the standard used by U.S. military medics.

Operator-Curated

Built by Special Forces veterans with real-world IFAK experience.

Authentic Components

Genuine CAT, NAR, QuikClot — sourced through authorized channels only.

IFAK FAQs

Common questions, answered straight.

What does IFAK stand for?
IFAK stands for Individual First Aid Kit. The format originated in the U.S. military as a personal-carry trauma kit issued to every soldier — designed for one user to treat themselves until follow-on care arrives. The IFAK is now the standard format for law enforcement, tactical professionals, and serious civilian preparedness. It is fundamentally different from a household first aid kit: an IFAK is built for life-threatening trauma, not minor injuries.
What's the difference between an IFAK and a trauma kit?
An IFAK is a specific type of trauma kit — designed for one person, optimized for personal carry, and sized to treat one patient. A general trauma kit may be larger and equipped to treat multiple patients. Both contain similar core components (tourniquet, hemostatic gauze, pressure dressing, chest seals), but IFAKs prioritize compact form factor and rapid one-hand access. If you're outfitting yourself, get an IFAK. If you're outfitting a vehicle, family, or team, look at larger trauma kits.
What components should every IFAK include?
A serious IFAK should include: a windlass tourniquet (CAT or SOFTT-W), hemostatic gauze (QuikClot Combat Gauze or equivalent), at least one pressure dressing (NAR ETD or Israeli bandage), and a pair of nitrile gloves. Advanced IFAKs add chest seals (HyFin vented), an NPA airway, and trauma shears. Anything missing the core four — tourniquet, hemostatic gauze, pressure dressing, gloves — is not a complete IFAK.
Should I get a rip-away IFAK or a fixed pouch?
Rip-away IFAKs detach from their MOLLE backing in one motion, which lets you hand the kit to a teammate or transfer it to a casualty. They're preferred for tactical, team, and shared-use scenarios. Fixed pouches are slightly more compact and simpler — better for solo civilian carry where you'll always be the one using it. Both formats work; the choice comes down to how you'll deploy the kit, not which one is "better."
Are ViTAC IFAKs HSA/FSA eligible?
Yes. The vast majority of IFAKs in this collection qualify as eligible medical expenses under HSA and FSA rules. You can pay directly with your HSA/FSA card at checkout. ViTAC provides itemized receipts and product contents lists upon request to support reimbursement claims. Some plans may require a Letter of Medical Necessity for certain components — see our HSA/FSA Benefits Guide for full details.
Do I need TCCC training to use an IFAK?
No, but training significantly improves outcomes. Tourniquet application and basic wound packing can be learned in a few hours through a Stop the Bleed course or ViTAC's Life Saver Seminar. Advanced IFAK components — chest seals, NPAs, needle decompression — should not be used without proper training. If you're untrained, start with a hemorrhage-focused IFAK and add capability as your skills grow.
What's the difference between a CAT and a SOFTT-W tourniquet?
Both are windlass tourniquets approved by the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC) and used by U.S. military and law enforcement. The CAT (Combat Application Tourniquet) is the most widely deployed — slightly easier for one-handed self-application. The SOFTT-W (Special Operations Forces Tactical Tourniquet — Wide) has a metal windlass and tri-ring buckle, preferred by some operators for durability. Both are excellent. Pick one and train with it consistently.
Can civilians legally carry IFAKs?
Yes. IFAKs and their components — tourniquets, hemostatic gauze, chest seals, pressure dressings — are legal to own and carry in all U.S. states. Some states regulate certain prescription items (like epinephrine), but standard IFAK contents are unrestricted. Civilians are also covered by Good Samaritan laws in most states when rendering emergency aid in good faith.
Can I order custom IFAKs for my agency or team?
Yes. ViTAC builds custom IFAKs for law enforcement agencies, security teams, schools, faith-based organizations, and corporate safety programs. Minimum order is 15 units with a 2-week lead time from approval. We can configure specific components, pouch types, and quantities to match your standardization needs. Reach out via our Custom Kit Orders page or email orders@vitacsolutions.com to start a build.
How often should I check or rotate IFAK contents?
Inspect your IFAK at least once a year. Check expiration dates on hemostatic gauze, chest seals, and pressure dressings — most have a 5-year shelf life from manufacture. Inspect the tourniquet for wear, dirt, or damage; replace if used in training. Replace gauze and dressings if packaging is compromised by moisture or temperature exposure. Keep your IFAK out of direct sunlight and extreme heat (closed vehicles in summer can degrade contents quickly).

Add'l Info

If You Only Remember This…

  • An IFAK is a compact, personal trauma kit designed for rapid bleeding control and life-threatening injury management when professional medical help isn't immediately available
  • The right IFAK depends on your environment (patrol, vehicle, range, outdoor), skill level, and whether you need basic hemorrhage control or advanced airway/chest trauma tools
  • Quality IFAKs include proven components like tourniquets, hemostatic gauze, chest seals, and pressure dressings—not generic band-aids

What Is an Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK)?

An Individual First Aid Kit—commonly called an IFAK—is a purpose-built trauma kit focused on treating severe, life-threatening injuries in the critical minutes before advanced medical care arrives. Unlike traditional first aid kits filled with adhesive bandages and antiseptic wipes, IFAKs prioritize hemorrhage control, airway management, and penetrating trauma response.

Originally developed for military and tactical applications, IFAKs have become essential gear for law enforcement officers, armed professionals, outdoor enthusiasts, range shooters, and anyone serious about emergency preparedness. The core philosophy: carry the tools that address the injuries most likely to cause preventable death in the field.

Modern IFAKs are compact, accessible under stress, and built around evidence-based protocols like TCCC (Tactical Combat Casualty Care) and TECC (Tactical Emergency Casualty Care). Whether mounted on a duty belt, stored in a vehicle, or packed for backcountry travel, a well-designed IFAK puts critical interventions within arm's reach.

How to Choose the Right IFAK for Your Needs

Not all IFAKs are created equal. Here's how to match the right kit to your situation:

Intended Use Environment
Patrol and duty kits prioritize rapid access and MOLLE compatibility. Vehicle-mounted IFAKs like headrest models offer hands-free storage. Range and outdoor kits balance portability with comprehensive coverage. Consider where you'll carry it and how quickly you need to deploy it.

Skill Level & Training
Basic kits focus on hemorrhage control—tourniquets, pressure dressings, and hemostatic gauze. Advanced kits add chest seals, decompression needles, and airway adjuncts. Choose components you're trained to use confidently under pressure.

Component Quality & Compliance
Look for proven brands: CAT or SOFTT-W tourniquets, QuikClot or Celox hemostatic agents, HyFin or Bolin chest seals. TCCC-compliant kits meet military-grade standards. Avoid kits with unknown or untested components.

Pouch Design & Accessibility
Rip-away pouches allow bystanders to access supplies quickly. Color-coded or labeled compartments reduce fumbling. MOLLE/PALS webbing enables modular mounting. Consider whether you need one-handed access or ambidextrous design.

Single-User vs. Multi-Casualty
Individual kits are sized for one person's immediate needs. If you're responsible for a team, vehicle occupants, or family members, consider kits with redundant supplies or pair an IFAK with a larger trauma bag.

Specialized Scenarios
K-9 handlers need dual-purpose kits with canine-specific supplies. Vehicle kits benefit from headrest or seat-back mounting. Minimalist EDC users may prefer ultra-compact "micro" IFAKs that fit in cargo pockets or glove boxes.

Who IFAKs Are For (And Who They're Not For)

IFAKs are ideal for:
Law enforcement and military personnel, armed security professionals, competitive shooters and range instructors, hunters and backcountry adventurers, first responders and medical professionals, and anyone trained in trauma response who wants immediate access to life-saving tools.

IFAKs may not be the best fit if:
You're looking for general-purpose first aid (minor cuts, burns, sprains)—standard first aid kits are better suited for everyday injuries. You have no training in tourniquet application, wound packing, or chest seal placement—consider pairing your IFAK purchase with a Stop the Bleed or trauma response course. You need a comprehensive family or workplace safety kit—IFAKs are specialized tools, not replacements for broader medical supplies.

What Makes a Quality IFAK?

The best IFAKs share several key characteristics. They're built around proven, field-tested components from trusted manufacturers. They're organized for rapid access under stress, with intuitive layouts and clear labeling. They're durable enough to withstand harsh environments—water-resistant materials, reinforced stitching, and reliable closures. They're sized appropriately for their intended carry method, whether belt-mounted, vehicle-stored, or pack-integrated.

Quality IFAKs also include clear, concise instructions or reference cards for users who may need guidance under pressure. Many are designed to be restocked and reused, with modular pouches that accept replacement supplies as components are used or expire.

FAQs

What's the difference between an IFAK and a regular first aid kit?
An IFAK is designed specifically for life-threatening trauma—severe bleeding, penetrating injuries, and airway compromise. Regular first aid kits focus on minor injuries like cuts, burns, and sprains. IFAKs contain tourniquets, hemostatic gauze, and chest seals; traditional kits contain bandages, antiseptics, and pain relievers.

Do I need training to use an IFAK?
Yes. While IFAKs are designed for rapid use, effective application of tourniquets, hemostatic agents, and chest seals requires hands-on training. We strongly recommend completing a Stop the Bleed course, TCCC/TECC training, or wilderness first aid certification before relying on an IFAK in an emergency.

How do I choose between a basic and advanced IFAK?
Start with your training level and use case. Basic IFAKs focus on hemorrhage control (tourniquets, pressure dressings, gauze) and are ideal for most users. Advanced kits add chest seals, decompression needles, and airway tools—choose these only if you're trained in their use and operate in higher-risk environments.

What components should every IFAK include?
At minimum: one CAT or SOFTT-W tourniquet, hemostatic gauze (QuikClot or Celox), a pressure dressing (Israeli or OLAES), trauma shears, and nitrile gloves. Many users also include chest seals, a nasopharyngeal airway, and a permanent marker for documentation.

How often should I inspect or replace IFAK supplies?
Check your IFAK every 6–12 months. Inspect tourniquets for damage, verify hemostatic agents haven't expired, and ensure packaging is intact. Most components have 3–5 year shelf lives. Replace any used, damaged, or expired items immediately.

Can I mount an IFAK on my duty belt or plate carrier?
Yes. Most IFAKs feature MOLLE/PALS webbing compatibility or belt loops for secure mounting. Rip-away designs allow quick detachment for self-aid or buddy-aid. Check product specs for mounting options and dimensions to ensure compatibility with your gear.

Are these kits suitable for vehicle or home storage?
Absolutely. Vehicle-mounted IFAKs (like headrest models) are designed for car, truck, or patrol vehicle storage. Standard IFAKs work well in glove boxes, center consoles, or home safe rooms. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat or moisture, which can degrade components.

Do IFAKs include instructions for use?
Many kits include quick-reference cards or illustrated guides. However, these are supplements—not substitutes—for formal training. Familiarize yourself with every component before an emergency, and practice deployment under realistic conditions.
