What Are Chest Seals?
Chest seals are adhesive occlusive dressings designed to close penetrating wounds to the chest — gunshot wounds, stab wounds, and other trauma that breaks the chest wall. Without a seal, air can enter the chest cavity through the wound and progressively collapse the lung, leading to tension pneumothorax (a rapidly fatal condition without intervention).
Modern chest seals are vented, meaning they include a one-way valve that lets air escape from inside the chest cavity but prevents air from entering. The HyFin® Vented Chest Seal from North American Rescue is the most-used vented seal in U.S. military, law enforcement, and EMS.

How to Choose the Right Chest Seal
1. Default to Vented
Vented seals are the standard for penetrating chest trauma. They prevent tension pneumothorax in a way non-vented seals can't. There's no significant downside to using a vented seal over a non-vented one.
2. Always Carry Twin Packs
Penetrating wounds typically have entry and exit points. Twin packs ensure you can seal both. Don't carry single seals as a primary supply.
3. Compact for EDC, Standard for Vehicle/Facility
HyFin® Compact fits in low-profile IFAKs and EDC kits. Standard HyFin® works for vehicle, range, and facility kits where space isn't a constraint.
4. Verify the Seal
Chest seals adhere to dry skin. If the patient is sweaty, bloody, or wet, wipe the area first — the seal won't hold otherwise. Check seal integrity after application and re-seal if it lifts.
5. Track Expiration
Chest seal adhesive degrades over time. Most have 3–5 year shelf lives. Inspect annually and rotate before expiration.
