If You Only Remember This…

  • 72 hours is the FEMA-recommended baseline for emergency self-sufficiency — the time it typically takes for organized response and aid to arrive after a major disaster
  • 72-hour kits cover the essentials: water, food, shelter, light, communication, sanitation, and basic first aid for one or more people
  • Choose based on number of people, mobility (bug out bag vs. shelter-in-place bucket), and whether children, pets, or specific medical needs require dedicated supplies

What Are 72-Hour Survival Kits?

A 72-hour survival kit is the minimum recommended emergency preparedness baseline for individuals and families. After a hurricane, earthquake, wildfire, blizzard, or grid failure, organized response can take 72 hours or more to reach affected areas. A 72-hour kit bridges that gap with the supplies you'd need to sustain yourself and your family until help arrives or conditions stabilize.

FEMA, the Red Cross, and most state emergency management agencies endorse 72-hour readiness as the starting point for personal preparedness. It's the right baseline for most households, with extended kits (7-day, 2-week) appropriate for higher-risk regions or remote locations.

What's Inside This Collection

  • Bug out bags — backpack-format kits built for evacuation, with food, water, shelter, fire, light, and signaling components
  • Bucket-format shelter-in-place kits — 5-gallon systems for staying home during hurricanes, blizzards, or extended outages
  • Family kits — sized for 2, 4, or more people with proportional food, water, and shelter supplies
  • Pet emergency kits — dedicated supplies for dogs and cats during family evacuations
  • Compact go bags — grab-and-go formats for vehicles, offices, and travel

How to Choose the Right 72-Hour Kit

1. Decide: Bug Out or Shelter In Place
Bug out bags prioritize portability for evacuations (wildfires, floods, mandatory orders). Shelter-in-place kits hold more supplies for staying home during hurricanes, blizzards, and extended outages. Many prepared families have both.

2. Match Kit Size to Household
Solo: 1-person kit. Couples and small families: 2-person kit. Families: 4-person or scale multiple 2-person kits. Don't forget kids' specific needs (comfort items, age-appropriate food) and pets.

3. Check Component Quality
Quality kits include name-brand water (Datrex, Mainstay), food bars with 5-year shelf life, real flashlights (not throwaway plastic), and basic first aid. Avoid kits that look comprehensive but feature low-quality components.

4. Consider Your Region's Risks
Hurricane zones: emphasize water, sanitation, and battery-free communication. Earthquake zones: prioritize sturdy shelter, hydration, and trauma supplies. Wildfire zones: pack bug out bags ready for rapid evacuation.

5. Plan to Inspect & Rotate
Most components have 5-year shelf lives. Set an annual reminder to check expiration dates, replace batteries, rotate water, and update clothing for current sizes (especially for growing kids).

Who These Kits Are For (And Who They're Not For)

This is for you if: You're building family emergency preparedness, live in a hurricane/earthquake/wildfire zone, want vehicle-based readiness, or simply refuse to be caught unprepared.

This may not be for you if: You're looking for extended grid-down preparedness (consider weekly or monthly food kits) or wilderness expedition gear (consider our backcountry kits).
