What Are Respiration Supplies?
Respiration supplies address breathing problems caused by penetrating chest trauma. The two most common interventions are chest seals (which close the wound to prevent air from entering the chest cavity) and decompression needles (which release trapped air when tension pneumothorax has already developed and is collapsing the lung).
Penetrating chest wounds are a leading cause of preventable battlefield death and a serious civilian threat in active shooter, vehicle accident, and industrial trauma scenarios. Stocking the right respiration supplies, and training to use them, is core to a complete trauma kit.

How to Choose the Right Respiration Supply
1. Start With Chest Seals
Chest seals are the entry-level respiration supply. Every trauma kit should include a vented twin-pack to cover potential entry and exit wounds.
2. Decompression Needles Require Training
Needle decompression is an advanced procedure performed by trained EMTs, paramedics, and tactical medics. Don't carry a decompression needle if you haven't been trained on its use — improper insertion can cause serious injury.
3. Match Stock to Skill Level
Civilian and basic tactical kits: vented chest seal twin-pack only. Advanced tactical, EMS, or military kits: chest seals plus decompression needle.
4. Consider Twin Packs
Penetrating wounds typically have entry and exit points. Always carry chest seals in pairs.
5. Verify Expiration
Both chest seal adhesive and decompression needle packaging degrade over time. Inspect annually and rotate before expiration (typically 3–5 years).
